Petrified wood is a siliceous stone, which makes it more chemically tolerant than marble or limestone. It is not acid-safe, though: avoid vinegar, lemon, and acidic bathroom or toilet cleaners, which can still dull or damage the surface.
Clean with a neutral pH stone cleaner, warm water and a soft cloth, then rinse and dry. Avoid scouring powders and abrasive cleaners, and never mix ammonia and bleach; used together they create a toxic gas.
Sealing increases resistance to staining, it does not make stone stain-proof. Reseal when water stops beading on the surface rather than to a fixed schedule.
